ADHD Assessment in Sydney

New South Wales

In Sydney, a registered psychologist can assess and diagnose ADHD, while a psychiatrist or paediatrician is who you need if medication is likely. NSW lets psychiatrists, paediatricians and neurologists prescribe stimulant medication under a standing class authority, and since 1 September 2025 has added a GP pathway for people already on stable treatment.

Who can prescribe ADHD medication in NSW

Psychiatrists, paediatricians and neurologists in New South Wales can prescribe stimulant medication for ADHD under a class authority, up to set maximum daily doses, without applying for individual patient approval. From 1 September 2025, GPs who complete accredited training can act as "continuation prescribers": they can resupply psychostimulant medicines to patients already on a stable dose without an ongoing specialist management arrangement. A smaller "endorsed prescriber" track lets specially trained GPs diagnose and initiate treatment directly. Other GPs need an individual NSW Health approval and a documented co-management or transfer-of-care arrangement with a specialist.

What it costs and how long you wait

Sydney does not have its own published wait-time or cost survey, so the honest comparison point is the national one: 2026 University of Wollongong reporting put the average adult assessment cost above $530 without rebates, with total costs (including follow-up sessions) averaging close to $1,400 nationally, and an average wait of just over 10 weeks for an adult's first appointment. A GP referral (Medicare item 23, a standard consultation) is the entry point to both the psychologist and psychiatrist pathway, and a psychiatrist consultation with a referral attracts a Medicare rebate under item 291 or 296.

Common questions about Sydney

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychiatrist for ADHD in Sydney?

Yes, for the Medicare rebate to apply. A referral from a GP (or a participating nurse practitioner) is required for the higher psychiatrist rebate items, and the referral needs to be for assessment and a management plan of a mental health condition.

Can a GP in NSW prescribe my ADHD medication?

Only if you are already stabilised on treatment a specialist started, and only once your GP has completed the accredited continuation-prescriber training introduced from 1 September 2025. Starting treatment for the first time still needs a psychiatrist, paediatrician or neurologist.
